Dementia & Its Caregiver Toll

Dementia & Its Caregiver Toll

Caring for a loved one can be an emotionally draining experience. Caring for a loved one with dementia brings additional stress and an emotional toll. Witnessing the deterioration of their memory is a unique and indescribable experience. Home Care Assistance understands this difficult process caregivers endure and commissioned a study that revealed the extent of the emotional impact.

We found that caregivers experience higher rates of physical, emotional, and mental burnout and are three times more likely than other caregivers to feel extreme stress from their responsibilities. With dementia being a common illness that is costlier than both cancer and heart disease, many day-to-day tasks fall in the laps of family members. This is resulting in a healthcare crisis of its own.

Home Care Assistance has combined forces with Maria Shriver’s Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement and Move for Minds and is awarding respite caregivers grants to assist them with their responsibilities.
